No sew - Hairclip tutorial

***

If you are a long time blog reader you already know my usual loooong timescales for everything... I did actually promised a tutorial for these easy and cute no sew hairclips almost a year ago, on Instagram (the only place I currently manage to find some time to share the things I love).. but as they say, better late than never so here it is.
To be honest, given the current world climate, I actually really wanted to publish it as soon as Italy, and then many other European and world countries, went into lockdown, as I wanted to provide a little bit of inspiration and distraction... but obviously my life was turned upside down from one day to the other, when schools/nurseries closed and only now, stealing a little time every day (it took me almost a week to prepare this post) from my many home and mum duties, I am managing to publish it... it wasn't easy finding the time, but I really wanted to, because I really want to try and spread a tiny bit of colour and happiness in these dark times.

***

First of all let me say I didn't completely invent these hairclips from scratch.. I got inspired by the basic construction of some old hairclips I had bought at a supermarket for Adele years ago! As they seemed pretty cute and easy to replicate I tried to think of ways to make some more myself.
Also, exactly because they don't include any sewing (they only need some hemming web tape, an iron and a hot glue gun) the edges will probably fray a bit with time.. (the same happened to the ones I had bought at the supermarket) but in my opinion, the whole prettiness of the hairclips is not that ruined by a bit of wear and tear and it's a small price to pay for the easiness of this project.
All the hairclips I am showing you in this post were made in two batch.. the first batch (the pink and blue ones) was made almost a year ago, June last year, and the second batch (the mustard, brown, pink and red) was made in January, a few months ago. At the end of the post I uploaded a quick pic taken in these days to show you some of them and how they are after several months of almost daily usage.

***

And here is the tutorial!

What you'll need:

- blank metallic alligator hair clips
- fabric in various patterns
- hot glue gun
- hemming web tape (in the UK you can find it in the supermarket where they usually keep a small selection of sewing supplies)
- fabric cutter, ruler and mat are ideal but not strictly necessary.. you can use some scissors and measuring ruler/tape if you don't have them

***

Step 1: Cut a 24 cm x 2.2 cm stripe from the fabric and the same length (24 cm) from the hemming web tape (that is usually 2 cm high, if it's not, cut it to size as it need to be 2 cm high)

***

Step 2: fold back the fabric stripe lengthwise towards the centre as in figure 2 and press to secure in position
Step 3: temporarily reopen the fabric strip, and place the hemming web inside the folded fabric, as in figure 3, and flatten it out with your fingers
Step 4: fold back again the fabric stripe lengthwise towards the centre and press
Step 5: by iron pressing the hemming web will melt and the fabric stripe will be permanently glued in this position

***

Step 6: cut the fabric strip in two pieces, one 20 cm long and the other 4 cm long
Step 7: Cut both ends of the longest strip of fabric in diagonal, as in pic 7
Step 8: Fold twice the long strip of fabric as in figure 8 to create a bow
Step 9: Press to secure in position

***

Step 10: with a bit of hot glue on top of the hair clip stick the bow to the clip
Step 11: hold in position to secure it and then let it cool down
Step 12: put a bit of hot glue on the centre of the bow
Step 13: lay the short strip of fabric, as in picture 13 to glue it on top of the bow

***

Step 14: put a bit of hot glue on the inside of the hair clip, mainly one side as shown in pic 14
Step 15: fold down one end of the central bow strip towards the inside of the hair clip and glue it in place
Step 16: repeat the same for the other side, so put some glue on the empty area on the inside of the hair clip  as in pic 16
Step 17: fold down the other end of the central bow strip and glue it as in pic 17

Step 18: la molletta é pronta! :)

***

Step 18: the hair clip is ready! :)

***

I hope you can find this tutorial useful.. the steps are not easy to explain with words (especially having a four years old constantly chattering and asking questions while I desperately try to put down a sentence :) ), that's why I tried to take pictures of every single step, so hopefully the images will be enough... at the end of the day this is a very simple and quick project!

Queste qui sotto , come vi accennavo a inizio post, é la situazione delle mollette dopo diversi mesi di uso, in alcuni casi quasi quotidiano..

***

And at last, these down here, is the current situation of wear and tear after a few months of almost daily use, so you can see for yourself if you reckon the project is worth it, despite a bit of unavoidable fraying..

***

A big hug.. and hopefully one day I'll be back again on this little place of mine.. although I doubt it will be very soon..!

  1. Happy, happy, happy to see all is well with your family. I was beginning to worry for you and your family. The hairclips remind me of my own use while in junior high school! I don't recall my daughter who will be 39 next week wearing any. Your tutorial is self-explanatory as you predicted! I remember having a little one nearby when I tried to sew - not easy to do! Stay well, Federica!

  12. How To Get Your Ex Lover/Partner/Boyfriend/Girlfriend/Wife Or Husband Back

I was married for 16 years to a loving mother and wife. We had 2 children together who are now 11 & 13. I reconnected with an old girlfriend from college on Facebook and we began an affair and I left my wife. The woman I had an affair with is a wonderful woman and I love her too and our kids had begun accepting the situation and my wife has kind of moved on, but not in love with the man she is seeing. I thought I fell out of love with my wife and I felt terrible about what I did to her - she is a good woman and I don't know what came over me. I decided to try and get her back and I was recommended to Lord Zakuza for help to get reunited with my wife and within 48 hours after I made contact with Lord Zakuza my wife decided to work things out with me and now we are back together with our children living as one happy family. I really don't know the words to use in appreciation of what Lord Zakuza did for me but I will say thank you sir for reuniting I and my family back. For those in trying times with their marriages or relationship can communicate with LORD ZAKUZA through the below informations.
