Meet "Bambola"!

***

I think I had spotted a Waldorf doll for the very first time when Adele was a newborn, or maybe when she was still inside my bump.
I remember I got enchanted straight away, and knowing absolutely nothing about them, I was happy enough browsing the web among the few beautiful ones I could find on sale, made by amazing doll makers, mainly from Eastern and Northern Europe. They were all very expensive (as it's only fair as I now know, but I had already guessed back then, how much work there is behind those masterpieces) and equally beautiful, and I was already thinking about giving one as a gift to Adele, bought from one of these talented artisans, as soon as she would have had an appropriate age to appreciate them and play with them. I don't know why, but I had already assumed that making one of these dolls was completely out of my league, and I totally ruled out the possibility of crafting one myself.... maybe because I couldn't understand how it was possible to "sculpt" those faces, those noses, those cheeks, and also the hair?! I really didn't know anything at all about that world and I also didn't  feel I had any energy or time to try to study and learn at that time.
Then, months passed by, even years actually, and I slowly changed my mind. I decided to get to know a bit more about that universe, and maaaaaaaybe to try and make one myself.

***

Fast forward just over 3 years and this past Christmas, under the tree of our lounge, my pixie found, among many gifts from Santa, also something that she knew (more or less) would have been given by her mum. Something that she slowly saw coming to life between my hands in the previous months. I really wanted her to see that the doll was being made by me, as I had been reading some articles and books about this, and I understood how important it is for a child, whenever possible of course, to see and understand that some toys have been created by hand, I read that it has a comforting effect and I loved that.

***

It was a very long process. First of all the study to understand where to find  some information, which patterns of books to buy, which materials were needed and where to source them. Then the proper making process, where I entered a fascinating new crafting world made of new techniques I had never heard about nor experienced before. The making process was certainly time consuming, especially the hair making, as it literally took weeks just to create them, but the biggest hurdle was definitely the whole studying bit that preceded the making.
To (try to) make it a bit easier to anyone following me and interested in maybe trying their hand at this (but also selfishly as an important reference for myself for the future) I decided to share quite a lot of all the info and choices I made regarding patterns and materials, so if you are interested, please keep on reading this post until the end as I'll try to be as detailed as possible.

- tutorial gratuito di Faith and String distribuito in vari post http://faithandstring.com/category/doll-making/.

- e ancora riguardo i capelli queste istruzioni

Regarding the doll itself, I had purchased, more than a year ago, a very interesting book that talks about the theory behind Waldorf dolls, their history and meaning, and it also gives some general instructions to create a few different types. The book is "Making Waldorf dolls" by Maricristin Sealey. I used this book to get a basic rough idea of what I was heading myself into, but I personally didn't use any of the patterns and instructions inside it.
Then, after hours and hours and hours, and days and days and days, spent in the web trying to find the patterns that could be more similar to the idea of the kind of doll I had in mind, these are the sources I found, used and/or purchased:

- free tutorial by Faith and String, spread among a few blog posts http://faithandstring.com/category/doll-making . I used it, again, as the book, as a background basic info gathering to understand what was waiting for me in this mysterious world and I especially loved the detailed pictures, but for me, being completely in the dark regarding these techniques, this tutorial probably wouldn't have been enough.

Again, I really loved the step by step pictures, and they gave me a general idea about the sculpting concept, the tying process etc.

- Pattern Jointed Waldorf Pacifier doll by Lali dolls bought on Etsy:
This is the main pattern I have used to make my doll. The price is comparable to a book price, and that is because this pattern is indeed comparable to a book, as it includes 104 pages full of extremely detailed instructions, tips and tricks, and many many step by step pictures.
I followed its instructions almost in every detail, I just omitted the dummy and the ears (I wasn't sure they would go well with the hairstyle I had in mind, but if I change my mind I can easily add them later on) and for the hair (which the pattern DOESN'T INCLUDE) I used other patterns/tutorials which I will tell about later on.

- as I was in complete panic and didn't literally know where to start from, I decided to also buy another pattern, again on Etsy, the Waldorf Baby doll pattern by Wild Marigold
I had already purchased other doll clothes patterns from this author (and a few of them were used to make clothes for this doll) and I loved her patterns.
I have to say the doll pattern itself is extremely well written, the step by step pictures are very detailed too, but I decided to use the previous pattern mainly because of the jointed arms/legs feature which I had set my heart onto.
Of this Wild Marigold pattern though, I used the hair instructions, as she explains in detail how to make a crochet cap (the cap that sits on the head and serves as a base for the doll hair), as the other pattern didn't include any hair instructions.
(having said this, I have to also say that in the web you can probably find a few free tutorials for crochet caps, for instance I had found this in Italian https://puppensaltini.wordpress.com/tag/capelli-bambole-waldorf/ but because I didn't use any of them I cannot guarantee on how easy and understandable the instructions are nor on the result)

-again regarding the crochet cap, this tutorial explains how to make it
(but, as stated above, I cannot give my experience as I didn't followed this, but I used the pattern above by Wild Marigold)

- and still regarding the hairstyle, these instructions:
were very useful to me to understand what I was supposed to do, once the crochet cap was completed, to create the kind of hairstyle I had in mind (even though in the end, I followed the instructions a bit but I also did it in my own way, so I brushed the mohair with the special brush they mention in the tutorial, to extend the mohair fibres but then I also added a few extra Mohair yarn strands here and there, as explained in the Wild Marigold pattern)

Well, if you managed to read until here you will have guessed that I basically did a biiiiig mix and match to try and make a doll that was as close as possible as the one sitting in my dreams!

- Long doll needles

***

Now for the materials. I simply didn't have time to browse and shop around much so I found this British website, that had more or less anything regarding Waldorf dolls (and doll making in general)  and I decided to buy almost everything in there.
The website is Little Oke dolls https://waldorfdolls.co.uk/ ( I think they sell and deliver abroad but obviously double check) and from there I purchased a big parcel full of quality and lovely items, following the materials list included in the pattern I used.

This is more or less what I have purchased:
- doll fabric (De Witte Engel colour T115 fair)
- brushable Mohair yarn to make hair in various shades (for the future too), and for this doll I used the shade dark brown
- 500 gr of wool batting, and I think I roughly used half for this doll, but I didn't properly check, sorry.
- tubular cotton bandage  5 cm wide
- Long doll needles
- strong tying thread - linen

Then, other things I purchased elsewhere were a curved needle to work on the head (in my case it was included in a upholstery needles set) and some ballpoint machine needles to sew onto jersey/stretchy materials.

Other things included in the list, like sewing thread for the body, thread matching the hair colour, various crochet hooks, embroidery threads, fabric for clothes, buttons etc, I already had in my craft room.

- cuffietta: Gnome Hat by Fig and Me acquistato qui

- scarpette stile Mary Janes: free tutorial trovato qui http://littlejennywren.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-little-jenny-wren-shoe-simple.html

- stivaletti: Bitty Baby Booties di Dragonfly's corner, pattern scaricabile gratuitamente su Ravelry https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bitty-baby-booties

***

And at last something about the clothes of course, well, fabric and materials, were already sitting in my craft rooms for years, including the pyjamas fabric which were upcycled by some old Adele's muslins from when she was a little baby!

Regarding the patterns, except for the dress which I designed myself, and the knitted things, which I will mention later on, I used all patterns included in this Wild Marigold set bought on Etsy:
- https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/518268162/waldorf-doll-clothes-patterns-set-of-8 (you can even purchase the items separately). So the trousers pattern, the leggings one (that I used for the pyjamas bottom), the blouse (which I used for the floral shirt and for the pyjamas top) and the cloth nappy.

Regarding the knitted things:

- coat: Penelope's pea coat, pattern bought on Ravelry (but I can't understand if it's still there or if it has been removed)
The coat making was quite easy but I unfortunately had some big issues with the positioning of the buttons and buttonholes that is not easy to explain here, as I basically forgot what the issue was..

- bonnet: Gnome Hat by Fig and Me bought here
I think this hat was intended for a much smaller doll than mine, but in any case, I love the result, and if I will feel like it, I don't think it will be difficult at all to modify the pattern a bit in the future to accomodate a bigger doll head.

- booties: Bitty Baby Booties by Dragonfly' corner, free downloadable pattern found in Ravelry here

***

And after this neverending series of lists upon lists, just a few words from me about this first adventure around the Waldorf dolls world.
It was amazing.
Finding out that what I thought was a technique completely out of my league, that someone could only learn through advanced classes or if blessed enough to have an innate artist talent, was instead a slow, detailed, surprising, pleasant and sometimes boring and difficult (especially the crochet cap bit, that I honestly thought I was never going to complete and that was really a struggle for my poor eyesight as crocheting Mohair is literally pure craziness to me. a real nightmare and I am not exaggerating!) ... but mostly magical.. to see that face taking shape.. to find out that through a slow work of simple steps and tiying around the head I could actually sculpt that little button nose myself, and that sweet face, those chubby cheeks.. and that adorable expression that made me fall in love with these dolls in the first place. It was amazing. Maybe it was one of the most proud moment of my crafter life, especially if I think that around 3 years ago I was already taking for granted that this was not something I could ever be able to make and I was already shortlisting dolls to buy from some other artisans.

What I loved most about this process was, besides seeing the doll expression taking shape, was colouring the cheeks at the end of the work, embroidering the robin and the little toadstools on her clothes, choosing the yarn, the shades, watching her lovely wardrobe increasing piece by piece!

What instead didn't completely satisfy me was:
 - the jointed arms and legs. I don't know if I did something wrong (quite likely) or if that's the way it's supposed to be, but I don't really like how visible the thread is at the joints, and especially the fact that now, using the doll the limbs are dangling a bit too much from the body. I'd like to find a solution and sort this out but I am not sure how.
- the hairstyle. I love the hair but I was envisioning them a bit differently. In the web (and in the tutorial mentioned above) I had found many examples of hairstyle made with brushable Mohair yarn and I was expecting the fibres to actually expand quite a lot, but of course that cannot realistically happen, so I had to add a few extra yarn strands to make the hairstyle thicker and longer. Well, if I will ever have a chance to attend a Waldorf doll making class I would definitely love to understand a bit more about this process!

I hope this long post wasn't too confusing... you've probably guessed by now how complex this subject is and how much of a novice I am in this world.
I can only hope I gave you some tips or directions, in case you are interested in trying yourself, or maybe to have introduced something new, if you were not familiar with the universe that surrounds these adorable dolls!
Personally, this very very long post, will be extremely useful in the future as a detailed reference... I am sure this won't be the first and only Waldorf style doll I make,. I hope some girlfriends and boyfriends will join her at some point, for both the pixie girl and the bear boy to play with. I can already envision a boy version with a pair of duck egg knitted dungarees, some beige gingham pjs, a grey knitted pom pom hat... awwww itchy hands!!!!
In the meantime we all take care of "Bambola" (that means doll in italian, yes, so very creative right!?), we spoil her with a constant supply of cakes, pizzas, felt ravioli and so many other yummy things.. we organise birthday parties for her with tea and cookies, and we are very very jealous (well, that's only me) of her gorgeous wardrobe! Such alucky lucky dolly!

  2. E' deliziosa!

  10. Come definire Bambola?

Brava!!!
