A beary sweet birthday

***

I could begin this post with some poetic and melancholic and emotional words about this very important moment for the life of a mother, but the truth is, what comes to my mind after an exhausting weeks and days is simply "thanks goodness they only have birthdays once a year" and even more "thanks goodness they become ONE year old (the most special and important birthdays of all I would say) once in a lifetime! :)
Of course, it's all my fault as I always want to make everything homemade (no, not everything, not this time, but most things), everything customised, everything the way I love it.. but if I didn't do this then it wouldn't be me, so these super busy days are more than welcome because I am so content and happy afterwards, and because creating keeps me happy and sane!
And for Leonardo's first birthday I honestly thought I wouldn't have made many things myself, because, if it was already hard before, now, with two little ones, finding the time is almost impossible. But I made it. No idea how, but I made it. I didn't manage to do every single thing I had in mind but most (the only thing I had to leave out and I am really sad about is a pair of knitted dungarees which I wanted him to wear on his big day, and there were only the straps missing but I really wasn't able to finish it on time :( )

***

I'd love to have the time and the chance to make some tutorial or create some printable for the things I made (like I used to do in the past every now and again) but I really don't think it's going to happen. I hope the pictures can still inspire you and maybe give you some ideas to then develop in your own way. I have to say many ideas were recycled from Adele's first birthday :) (see here)
And I am lucky, because I can play a bit with pc and graphic (well, it's not something that was gifted to me, I worked quite hard and spent a lot of time learning completely on my own using all kind of web tutorials and just trying stuff) so I am able to personalise quite a lot of the things I have in mind.... and then a bit of pinterest help and a bit of creativity and there we go.

***

I find the idea of the little pictures creating the big number one absolutely lovely, and once more (it happened the same when I made the one for Adele two years ago) Nicola and me spent ages just staring at the pics, enchanted and mesmerised by the changes happened in just 12 months.. seeing the pics of this little tiny birdie (not so tiny actually, as he was 4.10 kg at birth!) with dark hair and dark blue eyes slowly becoming a little man with blondish hair and green eyes (like his mum, at least for now) and that sweet sweet face, so sweet that everything gets forgiven and forgotten (and there is a lot, and I mean a lot to be forgiven, with this naughty little man!!!)

Props e decorazioni fatte a mano

-cake topper.
Orso Fatto da me.
Poi qualche pigna dai boschi qui dietro e tanto zucchero a velo!

- Cappellino

-finta lavagna primo compleanno

Decorazioni e props acquistati

And moving onto the more practical bits, after all this rambling, I am following bullet points to try and remember everything.

Handmade props and decorations

- Cake topper

Bear: handmade by me. I didn't use any pattern, it was quickly designed and stitched up and it clearly resembles the bear I had made for Leo's birth wreath... and except for the fact its face looks a bit too much like a monkey, I have to say I really love it and it came out exactly the way I had designed it on paper.
Numer 1: it's a wooden one, I had bought on Ebay years ago and used on Adele's first birthday cake. I painted blue all over.
Stars on the sticks: they are just simple doubled felt stars with thermo fusible paper in between and a wooden skewer in between.
And then some pine cones from the woods around our house and lots of icing sugar!

- Party hat

This one too was whipped up very quickly (well... not that quickly as it took a few hours, but I mean I made it in a rush) without following a proper tutorial. I had downloaded a few templates from the web and eventually made up my own... with heavy inspirations from a few I had found around (although they were made of paper).
I really went on with a trial and error method and the result is as cute as imperfect (if you would see the inside of the hat you would understand) and I wouldn't be able to explain with words without pics to support.. but there are a lots of tutorials in the web that you could use as a base to then do something similar to this if you want to.

- Bunting with bears and stars
I drew it with Inkscape (it's similar to Illustrator but more basic and free) on the pc and then printed on card and cut out and hang with some string attached with simple sellotape on the back.

- Mock blackboard with facts and stats
I made it myself on the pc on Photoshop Elements but there are a few shops on Etsy (and probably elsewhere too) that can make for you after you provide them with your info and facts.

- Food tags
Drawn by me again on Inkscape and Photoshop and then printed on card and cut

Shop bought decorations and props

- Plates, napkins, wooden cutlery, light blue polka dots paper bunting and plenty of various balloons. All bought more or less all from Ebay. And to think that the bear themed props were found last minute while looking for something else (I had already bought simple blue plates and napkins!) and when I realised they perfectly matched the theme and the illustrations I had designed I had to buy them, what a stroke of luck, they were perfect!

Cibo buffet

Buffet food

Everything made by me and more or less the same things I had prepared for Adele's first birthday (but something less as we were less people this time). Some things were prepared in advance and frozen (the mini panini buns and the danubios), others the day before (all the cakes and sweet things), and some other on the same morning (pizzas and sanwiches).
I made thick and very soft pizza (we call it bakery pizza in Italy), little puff pastry pizza squares, tomato, mozzarella, and mayo sandwich, prawns and pink sauce (mayo+ketchup) sanwiches, tuna, egg and mayo sandwiches, crisps, olives, danubio (like a soft filled bread) with scamorza (smoked mozzarella) olives, capers and sundried tomatoes, and danubio with speck (smoked ham) and cheese, mini panini buns with various cured meats, and mini panini buns with scamorza and grilled vegetables.

Ho fatto

Torta compleanno limone e ricotta

Cake pops a orsetto e riccio

{mi son divertita cosí tanto a farli, che ho fatto le foto dei vari step e prepareró presto un tutorial}

***

And then the cakes, which really were the main feature of the buffet I think, and that took most of my time and energy during the party preparation, as for once I wanted to try something new and very risky (for me)!

I made:

Birthday cake

Simple ricotta and lemon cake (a favourite of ours.. recipe here but it's in Italian) made twice, and stacked up with custard and cream in between

Chocolate salami dressed up as a bear

My mission of trying to make chocolate salami (that is a very good but very ugly cake indeed) as cute as possible, continues, after the one dressed up as a Christmas pudding, see here, this time I enjoyed playing with icing fondant and I really love the result, can't believe I made it myself!!!

Bears and hedgehogs cake pops

They were the main satisfaction and the thing I am more proud about the party! They required three trials.
The first time I had used recipes found in Italian websites, I used some shop bought little cakes (as I was in a rush) and jam to join everything. Well.. they went straight in the rubbish bin :( (not necessarily due to the recipe, it just didn't work at all, maybe also because it was my first time and I didn't do everything exactly as it was supposed to be done)
The second time I used british recipes (this one) and although the ingredients are waaaay more heavy  (butter butter and lots of it) the result was perfect. I used this trial to understand well all the steps and to experiment with the decoration part, as I didn't have any precise tutorial to follow.
And finally the third time, a couple of days before the party, as these cake pops keep well in the fridge for a few days, and these sweet delicious cuties were created at last. Yes delicious! Because,  in my experience, the less fancy and pretty the cakes are, the better in terms of taste (don't let me compare a delicious homemade tiramisu with a super fancy  but quite boring standard layered cake covered in fancy fondant decorations please!), but this time I have to say these little cuties were a surprise. They remind me a bit of chocolate salami (what in english I think it's called fridge cake) but with vanilla taste instead of chocolate. Absolutely delicious and that's testified by the fact that luckily (after all the hard work to make them) they were really appreciated by both adults and mostly by kids who ate plenty of them!
{I enjoyed so much making them that I decided to take many pics of the step by step and I am going to post a tutorial soon}

***

How can I summarise this very special birthday party?
Big bears and little bears, blue, turquoise and brown, custard and chocolate, plenty of balloons, a whole canister of helium, a house full of laughter and twinkly lights, a little bear (who is already a little man) glued to his mummy at the beginning of the party, but then slowly warming up and getting cuddled by everyone by the end of it, a very grey rainy sky as only the worst November days can be, that made the house dark (but cosy) and the pics not that good, and finally a very happy, content and super tired mama.
Our little boy won't remember anything of all of this, but I hope that through all the pictures we took (plenty more and more personal of these few of course) he will understand how special that day was, how much his mum tried to make everything a bit magic, and how much love surrounded him!

{eccolo qui sotto l'orsetto felice felice, circondato da mille palloncini e alle prese con la sua torta di compleanno (la prima delle tante, quella mangiata il giorno vero del compleanno, venerdi, il giorno prima della festina) e con i suoi nuovi giochini per i quali deve giá lottare perche la sorellona se li é naturalmente accaparrati tutti all'istante!}

***

{here is the happy little bear, surrounded by lots of balloons and busy with his birthday cake (the first of many, this was the one we had on his proper birthday day, the day before the party) and with his new toys, for which he already had to fight for with his big sister of course!}

***

Have a fantastic life my little bear, you, we, made only the first step, now slowly the rest of the journey will fold out in front of you. Don't grow too fast please, and stay cuddly as you are, because, even if I always complain because you never let me do anything at all, I love your cuddles and your being such a mummy boy is the best thing in the world!

  3. Such a fun birthday party! You could be an Event Planner, Federica. Yes, I remember my only daughter's 1st birthday! She has the photos we took to share her and our excitement - but she has no personal memories. So...you have given your little bear a wonderful set of memories to last a lifetime! That banner, the big cake and most of all the perfect cake pops you made! I just had my first last year - they are perfect for the children! I missed your blog posts - but I knew you were using your time to spend it with your little ones!!! So glad you did but now I am excited to have you back and sharing your life, your creativity and your photos! Grazie!
